How an NYC Wedding Photographer Got Found on ChatGPT
On showing up where people are actually searching and why it matters more than ever
The lovely couple who found me via AI.
As an NYC documentary wedding photographer, I'm always thinking about how couples find me. This past weekend during an engagement session I asked exactly that and the answer stopped me in my tracks.
We used ChatGPT to search for a photographer in NYC.
She hesitated for just a second before she said it. I turned to her and said “wow my marketing is working.” Internally it felt like a quiet win. Months of rethinking my website, being intentional about my content, writing blog posts that actually say something. Here was the proof, standing in front of my lens.
Hard work has a way of showing up when you least expect it.
For couples looking for a photographer in NYC & Connecticut
The way people find photographers is changing — and honestly it's changing in your favor.
Traditional Google searches give you a list of links and leave you to figure it out yourself. But when you ask an AI like ChatGPT to find you a photographer, you can actually describe what you're looking for. Not just "NYC engagement photographer" but "a documentary style photographer on the Upper East Side who specializes in natural unposed moments and has experience with at-home sessions." The more specific you are, the better the result.
AI search rewards photographers who have clearly communicated who they are, what they do, and who they do it for. Which means the couples who find you through it are already pre-qualified — they weren't browsing, they were describing exactly what they wanted and the algorithm matched them to you.
That's a very different kind of inquiry. And in my experience, it leads to a very different kind of client relationship from the very first message.
For photographers and creatives building their business
Here's what I want fellow photographers to hear: your website and your content are not just a portfolio. They are how the next generation of search finds you.
I spent the last year rebuilding my website with intention. Not just making it look hopefully more beautiful but making sure it actually said something. Clear language about my style and approach. Blog posts that answer the questions my couples are actually asking. Real wedding and engagement stories with specific details, real locations, real moments. Consistent language across every page that reflects exactly who I am and what I do as a documentary wedding photographer in New York City, New England, and beyond.
I am also, by day, a marketer with ten years of experience in tech. I understand SEO, content strategy, and how algorithms decide what surfaces and what doesn't. That knowledge doesn't leave you just because you pick up a camera on the weekend. If anything it's one of the most useful things I bring to running a photography business. Although I will say I do have more I should be doing on social media…
The philosophy, without giving away the entire playbook: be specific, be consistent, and write like a human being. AI search is getting very good at identifying content that is genuine versus content that is stuffed with keywords and says nothing. The photographers who will win in this new landscape are the ones who have something real to say and say it clearly.
I'm still figuring it out — every photographer is. But getting found by a couple on ChatGPT on a Saturday afternoon felt like a pretty good sign that the work is pointing in the right direction.
If you're planning a wedding or engagement session in New York City, New England, or abroad and looking for a documentary photographer who shows up, blends in, and captures the day as it actually unfolds — Hi, hello — I'm glad the algorithm sent you. 📸
