A destination wedding photographer on why Italy delivers, what couples should know before they book, and why the venue does half the work.
There is a reason couples keep choosing Italy. The architecture, the landscape, the food, the light — every element of an Italian wedding works quietly in your favor before a single photo is taken. As a documentary wedding photographer who has now shot a destination wedding in Italy, I can tell you firsthand: the venue does a lot of the work. My job is simply to show up and not get in its way.
If you’re a couple considering a destination wedding in Italy and wondering whether it’s worth it — here’s what I know from the other side of the lens.
Why Italy works so well for weddings
The settings are genuinely unmatched. Whether you’re drawn to the rolling hills of Tuscany, the dramatic cliffs of the Amalfi Coast, the elegance of Lake Como, or the ancient beauty of Sicily — Italy offers a backdrop that is nearly impossible to replicate anywhere else in the world. Every region has its own character, its own light, its own particular magic.
My first international wedding was at Castel Hörtenberg in Bolzano, a Gothic Renaissance castle in the South Tyrol region with the Dolomites rising behind it. You can see a snippet of gallery here. What struck me most was how the setting elevated everything around it. The portraits, the ceremony, the candid moments between guests — all of it was made richer simply by where we were.
And the guests feel it too. There is a particular energy at a destination wedding that you simply don’t get at home. People have traveled, they are somewhere new and beautiful, and that collective sense of occasion and adventure shows up in every frame. Guests at a destination wedding are more present, more joyful, more willing to jump into a pool on a cool Friday evening in the rain. That energy is a gift to a documentary photographer.
What to know before you book
Planning an international wedding is no small undertaking and the earlier you can lock in your key vendors the better. As your photographer, the sooner we can connect and confirm your date the sooner you can cross one critical item off your list and focus on everything else. I’d recommend reaching out at least twelve months in advance for any Italy wedding date, and earlier for peak season dates in late spring and early fall.
A few things worth knowing from a photographer’s perspective:
Scout your venue timeline early. Every Italian venue has its own rhythm — when the light shifts, where the best portraits happen, which corners of the property are worth lingering in. I arrive early to every destination wedding to get a feel for the space before the day begins. That preparation is what allows me to move quickly and quietly when the moments happen.
Build in flexibility. Destination weddings have more moving parts than a local wedding — travel, time zones, vendor coordination across languages and borders. The couples who enjoy their day most are the ones who build breathing room into their timeline rather than scheduling every minute.
Trust the setting. This is the best advice I can give. You chose Italy for a reason. Let the venue, the landscape, and the occasion do what they do and trust your photographer to capture it as it unfolds.
Where I’d love to photograph next
Having shot my first international wedding in Bolzano, Italy, I am hungry for more. Lake Como, Sicily, and Tuscany are all at the top of my list — as is England, where I hold a British passport and have a particular personal connection. If you’re planning a wedding somewhere extraordinary and want a documentary photographer who will travel, show up prepared, and deliver a gallery that makes you feel like you’re back in that moment every time you look at it — I would love to hear from you.
Go with what speaks to you. A destination wedding in Italy and a beautifully planned wedding at home are both the right answer. But if Italy is calling… answer it. I’ll meet you there.
